ELLERMANN'S GUIDE TO
Flower and Plants Care
To keep your flowers and plants fresh and beautiful for longer, treat them with a little extra love and kindness.
Flowers
Always start with a clean vase filled with fresh lukewarm water.
Add the complimentary sachet of flower food that comes with each Ellermann bouquet into your vase of water. Make sure to follow the guidelines on each sachet, as instructions may vary.
Strip off any leaves that will fall below the waterline, as these will promote bacterial growth causing the flowers to wilt quickly.
Cut 2-3cm off each stem using a clean sharp knife or scissors. Always cut at a sharp angle so the stems can absorb water more effectively, and place flowers directly in vase.
Display the flowers in a cool, light location away from direct sunlight
Avoid placing your flowers directly under a fan or heater; flowers are sensitive to extreme hot or cold temperatures.
Top up the water in the vase daily, and remove any faded flowers as they appear.
Every two to three days, re-cut flower stems and replace water with a fresh supply.
Houseplants
All plants have different likes and dislikes but the most important components to consider are water, light, temperature and humidity:
Alternating periods of drought and flood can play havoc on a plant’s root system. As a general rule, most plants like having their roots consistently moist, but not wet.
Provide the right light. It may be a case of trial and error to find out if your plant is receiving the right amount of light, but as a general rule, most houseplants are tropical plants that flourish in indirect sunlight.
Avoid placing plants in spots with particularly high or low temperatures, such as next to heat or air conditioning ducts, between curtains and a frosty window, or on top of a television or microwave.
Air conditioners can be very drying – treat your plant to a little extra humidity with a daily spritz of mist.
Handy tips on how to care for some of our favourite blooms
Rose
Blooms best in: All year round
Keep in Mind: Sensitive to bacteria, it’s important to keep roses in clean vases with fresh water. Roses last longer in a cool area, but to entice them to open up a little quicker, temporarily place them in a warmer spot for six to eight hours.
Tulip
Blooms best in: Spring and Winter
Keep in Mind: Tulips tend to welt in the heat; they are best displayed in a cool area to maximise their longevity. If you spot any white ends on their stems, simply snip them off with scissors – it’ll help them drink water more ease.
Hydrangea
Blooms Best In:Summer
Keep in Mind:Hydrangeas take in water from their petals, so it’s important to gently mist these once per day. If their flowers start to wilt, flip them upside down and soak the petal end of the flowers in cold water for a couple of minutes.
Ranunculus
Blooms Best In: Spring & Winter
Keep in Mind: Ranunculuses don’t need much water, however, they tend to be water polluters when kept in vases, so make sure to refresh the vase with clean water daily. These flowers also prefer to have a little extra breathing space making a vase with a wide opening their perfect home.
Orchid
Prime Season: All Year
Keep in Mind:Orchid leaves burn easily when placed under intense sunlight, and are happiest placed indoor with indirect sunlight. Orchids don’t need much to drink – watering them just once or twice a week sparingly with a tablespoon will keep them healthy.
Lilac
Blooms Best In: Spring & Winter
Keep in Mind: Lilacs are particularly thirsty flowers, so remember to keep their vases topped up with fresh water daily.
Succulent
Prime Season: All Year
Keep in Mind: Succulents are easy-going plants and can survive for weeks without water. Place them indoors with natural light and initially avoid bright, direct sunlight until they have fully adapted to their new home.
Air Plant
Prime Season: All Year
Keep in Mind:Air plants are relatively easy to care for as they only need to be watered once a week by submerging the plant completely in water for five minutes. If you live in a dry environment, increase watering to every 4 – 5 days.
